PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems​

PRESENTATION
OF THE PROGRAM

The mobility module at PhD level in Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems (BEHealSy) is designed to create a new generation of student entrepreneurs to develop innovative devices and services for a healthier Europe. This joint initiative combines strong scientific education, training in entrepreneurship, learning-by-doing pedagogy and mobility schemes.

BEHealSy is designed to equip doctoral students in engineering with multidisciplinary research skills in health systems and the ability to translate research outcomes into innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. Nine biomedical engineering universities and several industrial partners (IBEC, LEITAT, GE and Medicen) collaborated to develop a strong, unique curriculum that addresses the need for personalised health solutions on all levels – from the cellular through organismic to systemic. The BEHealSy mobility module is based on two EIT-Health funded M.Sc. programs in biomedical engineering: CEMACUBE and MTIH.

STRUCTURE

BEHealSy is aimed at PhD students already enrolled at a university on the year 2 or 3 in case of a 5 years’ program.

The mobility module includes of 3 major components:

  • Mobility and placement: industrial visit and industrial mentoring as well as mobility at a partner university.
  • An internship at one of the partner universities, and/or through clinical, SME or industrial placements. During their internship students gain broader experience of real-life working environments and learn additional methods that will aid their research.
  • Dissemination and commercialisation of research results and knowledge: Close collaboration between the partners will bring the research knowledge outputs to industry and other scientific researchers. Examples of activities: Focused themed research symposia, discussions on research visions and research needs. Creation of innovative products, real-life solutions, new business models and business opportunities all constitute long-term outcomes of the programme.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS & PROCEDURE

The general entry requirements are:

  • Degree at the advanced level relevant to topic of PhD study
  • Theoretical and/or practical expertise and experience in I&E 

The individual selection and recommendation to the curriculum, composition and extend of the mobility module will be done by the scientific commitiee of the program based on the student’s project.

After successful graduation from the host university the students will be encouraged to take their ideas and prototypes futher down the innovation path by applying to EIT Health E-labs and/or Bootcamps and other programs to accelerate Business Creation.
